Creating Assistants
Admins can create Assistants using AI generation, from scratch, or from a template. Each method gives you a configurable Assistant with instructions, model, level, and optional skills, data sources, and integrations.
Who Can Create
Only users with Admin role can create and edit Assistants.
Creation Methods
1. Generate with AI
Best when you have a clear idea of what you need and want a fast setup.
- Click Create New Assistant
- Select Generate Assistant using AI
- Enter a description of what you want (e.g., “Sales Lead Assistant to automate lead qualification and prioritize Sales Opportunity”)
- Click Generate with AI
- Questions step – AI generates 5 contextual questions; answer them (optional) and click Continue
- Integrations step – Select which integrations the Assistant should use; click Continue
- Generation step – AI generates name, description, instructions, model, and suggested questions
- Review the result and adjust if needed
- Configure additional tabs (Skills, Data Sources, Automations) as desired
- Click Update or Create to save
The AI uses your company’s brand voice, target customers, and key services to tailor the Assistant.
2. Create from Scratch
Best when you want full control or a custom configuration.
- Click Create New Assistant
- Select Create Assistant from Scratch
- Click Create from Scratch
- You’re taken to the configuration page with empty fields
- Fill in General tab:
- Name (required)
- Description (required)
- Instructions (required, min ~200 words)
- Model (required)
- Level (Expert, Manager, Specialist, Worker)
- Suggested Questions (at least one)
- Optionally enable Knowledge Base and set Max Knowledge Base Articles
- Click Create to save
- Configure Skills, Data Sources, Integrations, Automations, Sub Agents in their tabs
Note: The Start Chat button stays disabled until all required fields are filled.
3. Start from Template
Best for common use cases with proven setups.
- Click Create New Assistant
- Select Start from a Template
- Browse the template cards (name and description)
- Click a template to select it
- Click Next
- You’re taken to the configuration page with template values pre-filled
- Customize name, description, instructions, and other fields
- Click Create to save
- Configure additional tabs as needed
If no templates exist, you’ll see a message to create your first Assistant from scratch.
Basic Configuration (General Tab)
- Name – Display name
- Description – Brief overview of what the Assistant does
- Instructions – Main behavior and guidelines for the AI; supports templates via
# - Model – AI model (dropdown with vendor logo and description)
- Level – Expert, Manager, Specialist, or Worker
- Enable Knowledge Base – Turn on/off access to Knowledge Base
- Max Knowledge Base Articles – Limit documents retrieved per query
- Suggested Questions – Shown when starting a conversation; at least one required
Enhance Instructions – Use the button to have AI improve your instructions.
Skills
Skills define Q&A pairs for specific topics. Add a skill, define questions and answers, and the Assistant uses them when relevant. See Skills for details.
Data Sources
Choose which Knowledge Base documents the Assistant can use. Mark some as Mandatory (always included) and others as Filtered (included when relevant). See Knowledge.
Integrations
Add external integrations (Slack, HubSpot, Gmail, etc.) and internal functions so the Assistant can use them during conversations. See Integrations.
Automations
Attach Automations the Assistant can run. Configure how each input is handled (Agent-controlled vs custom values). See Automations.
Sub Agents
Assign other Assistants this one can delegate to. Sub-agents must be at the same level or lower. See Sub-Agents.
Creating a great assistant
- Clear name and description — Help users pick the right Assistant and set expectations.
- Strong instructions — Be specific about tone, scope, and what the Assistant should (and shouldn’t) do. Use Enhance Instructions for suggestions.
- Relevant skills — Add Q&A pairs for FAQs and fixed procedures. See Knowledge for data sources.
- Right integrations — Enable only the services this Assistant needs. See Integrations.
- Useful automations — Connect automations the Assistant can run when the conversation calls for it. See Automations.
Troubleshooting
- Start Chat disabled – Ensure all required fields are filled (name, description, instructions, model, level, at least one suggested question) and click Update
- AI generation fails – Check network, try again; ensure description is clear and company settings exist
- Data Sources tab missing – Enable Knowledge Base in the General tab
- Integration not in list – Connect it first on the Integrations page
